  • Second Chances Run Held at Shakopee

    supporting image

    By Pamela Rubash

In honor of April being Second Chances Month, the Prison Fellowship Academy Graduate IPs collaborated with Treatment to organize a 5K on Saturday April 27th at MCF-SHK.

This opportunity allowed the 70 runners/walkers to reflect on what their personal Second Chance meant to them and to be reminded of their worth. All participants were asked to write out their “why” to describe the reasons they were running - for some women it was about sobriety, for some it was restoring family, their children, their education, their faith, their freedom.

These “whys” were glued to card stock and staked into the ground every 10 feet along the path. Everyone who took part was an active participant in programming in the facility, be it PFA, treatment or education. Watching the individuals challenge themselves and cheer on one another and take pride in their accomplishments was incredible.

  • Shout Out: Shakopee Leadership and A-team

    By Jennifer Kern-Sieleni

Shakopee has been rather busy the first quarter of the year, unfortunately seeing an increase in major events. However, our Lieutenants have done outstanding with showing support both verbally acknowledging our line staff's efforts, helping with tasks, and checking in to ensure their staff are doing well mentally.

Our A-team, and the utility filling in, have been professional through some stressful and trying events, and showed compassion to their struggling coworkers in the aftermath.

It has been great to see that even through the stressful events, everyone pulls together and takes care of each other.

Miranda Buck is currently working as a 1st watch Work Out of Class (WOOC) Lieutenant. She holds one out of two positions. Approximately two months ago her teammate fell ill. Due to this, Lt. Buck was left solo for this time frame. She has been successful with her independent coverage with little assistance. Her commitment to the position is needed and appreciated.

I need to give a shout out and acknowledge the amazing work being done by WOOC Sgt. Bhattacharyya and WOOC Sgt. Scheuerman in the Monahan unit at MCF-Shakopee.

This is the first time as a WOOC Sergeant for both of them, and they took over the 2nd and 3rd Watch Sergeants spots in the biggest unit in the facility. This unit is no easy task to manage; their leadership skills, work ethic, and professional integrity has really been brought to the surface with this assignment, and I am so proud of them for taking this on and succeeding.

I have received numerous emails from both security and non-security staff regarding how well they're running the unit, and I couldn't agree with them more. You both rock!!

MCF-SHK hosted several “badge ceremonies" over the past month. The reactions to receiving the badges has been very positive. The administration at MCF-SHK would like to share the following article from Officer Kimberly Spinner, one of the most positive people I have EVER met! Sherlinda Wheeler

“What the Department of Corrections Badge Ceremony meant to me"!

Upon arrival for the Badge Ceremony on January 25, 2024, I had zero expectations of what to expect other than receiving a Badge for my uniform. To my utter amazement what I witnessed was wonderful positivity, magnificent support, and love from the DOC.

This is not something you feel every day in a job like ours. I was humbled, honored and overwhelmed and found myself fighting back tears during the memorable ceremony.

Each day I come to work happy with a smile on my face, whatever happens during my shift, I deal with it, and move forward but always with a smile and a grateful heart. When my shift ends and it is time to go, I leave happy. I love my job, I love the people I work with, the Officers, Lieutenants, Sergeants, Warden, AWA's, Captains and ALL other employees at MCF-SHK, you really know how to make someone feel important and special! To receive this badge with my fellow Officers, was very uplifting and quite a gift to me. It made me feel a sense of pride in being a Corrections Officer.

Prior to the badge ceremony, I didn't have a favorite number, but since the ceremony happened on my birthday, 125 is now my favorite number. There are no truer words to describe the feeling I felt in receiving this act of legitimacy other than; PURPOSFUL, HUMBLED AND HONORED! Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve and be a humble, honored, and valued Corrections Officer.

    With Heartfelt Gratitude,

    MCF-SHK Officer Kimberly Spinner
